Ensure students hear the lecture and not the interference

If your lecture theatre's microphone system has ever struggled to ensure all students hear every word in crystal clear sound, free from interference from mobile phones and other electronic devices, then the Revolabs Executive HD system could provide the solution.

The Executive HD Wireless Microphone System has high definition audio that allows it to pick up the entire human voice spectrum. The system uses the new Revolabs Designed for Speech technology to provide wideband frequency, which improves the intelligibility and presence of speech.

All Revolabs HD Wireless Microphones include technology which enables the microphone to operate cleanly even when in direct contact with wireless electronic devices known to cause unwanted audio interference, such as GSM mobile phones, smart phones, etc.

It's also a green solution, with rechargeable batteries that provide up to eight hours of talk time after each full charge.

The system is very flexible, allowing you to mix and match any combination of Revolabs HD Wireless Microphones including wearable, tabletop (omni – or directional) boundary, or XLR Adapter for handheld microphones. The HD Wireless Microphones can be placed up to 100 feet away from the Revolabs Executive HD Venue System.

It's not just in the lecture theatre that the system excels. It is designed to enable easier collaboration with superior audio for video and audio conference calls, distance learning, webcasts, and other related collaboration applications.

There's no need to worry about the forthcoming Channel switchover as it's a future proofed solution. Revolabs Wireless Microphones are engineered to accept both Channel 69 and Channel 38. In this way users can upgrade their microphones now and still be able to use them when the Channel is switched over in 2012.

Worldwide showcase at King's College London

Reflex recently installed a unified communications system, linking King's College London to five medical training establishments including Guy's Hospital and its Biomedical Research Centre, which showcases worldwide the latest advances in medical science.

To enhance its training of the current and next generations of physicians, King's decided to upgrade its conferencing capabilities, which are a key element of its Biomedical Forum. Hosted at Guy's, the videoconferencing feeds are streamed out to a variety of facilities, including St. Thomas Hospital and Karolinska Stockholm.

As part of the brief, we supplied a booth mounted high definition projector and Tandberg C60 video conferencing facilities with front and rear high definition cameras. The video conferencing system is linked up to other training hospitals via a bridge previously installed by Reflex.

The new systems give the College's technicians full preview facilities and the ability to display any input on any screen. It means that presentation material, DVD content and camera views can be queued and shown to the Lecturer in advance of it appearing to the audience helping them to give a seamless presentation.

Also part of the installation were TeamMate podiums, which provide control from one teaching area, a scaler for analogue sources, Bluray player, and a Crestron control system with panels on the TeamMate for user operation. A full audio system was installed along with a link into the existing lighting system and a Kramer DVI matrix in a control booth rack.

The Results

Feedback from Guy's staff has been positive, particularly in terms of ease of use and flexibility.

"The requirements for this particular venue were challenging because of the degree of technical flexibility and control needed for some events, while also remaining intuitive for non-technical users in day-to-day academic use," says Paul Layland, Guy's IT/AV programme manager. "The end product is an elegant, robust, utterly dependable and predictable solution that does what we wanted it to."

New technical team member has global experience

Continuing with our strategy to develop our technical offering, we are delighted to welcome on board Bryan Edwards, Technical Sales Manager. Bryan's role will involve working with Reflex's account managers in designing technical systems for clients.

Bryan has a wealth of experience in this field. An electronics engineer by trade, he spent 12 years working in South Africa in telecoms and more recently has developed high-end AV systems in the UK including central and local government. His experience includes work at the House of Commons, House of Lords and Welsh Assembly.

Having worked for the last two years as a freelance AV design engineer, with clients in the Middle East and India, Bryan missed the 'hands on' side of his work. Researching the most respected AV integrators, Reflex was the name that repeatedly came up!

Bryan is not only CTS qualified but is a PRINCE2 project manager and Reflex welcomes him to the team.

Audio and Video queries solved

We have recently launched two new, free of charge services - Video Doctor and Audio Consultancy Service.

Video Doctor is a direct response to a 200% growth in Video Communications business at Reflex over the last three years.

Roland Dreesden, our MD explains the thinking behind the launch.

"Increasingly, we are delivering integrated solutions that take technologies from different manufacturers and require them to work effectively together. Each manufacturer can give advice on their own products, but we recognised a gap in the market for a resource that can take a broader view – someone who can give cross-manufacturer, commercially aware advice."

The Video Doctor service is an email and phone service that makes this expertise available through one contact point. Additionally a chat service will be available shortly plus the Video Doctor will also make site visits on request.

The type of query the Video Doctor may assist with is business based as well as technical. For example, they can help a customer to understand how video communication can benefit their business. Or they may advise a customer who is looking to distribute video around their business but are confused by the options.

We see a high demand for the Video Doctor's services as Video Communication continue to grow strongly. There is large growth potential in the large corporate market, universities and healthcare. Our experience is that the SME sector is also crying out for a simple way to implement some of these technologies that will help their business.

Our audio consultancy service covers many aspects of sound system design, test and measurement and covers the application of the principals taught in our recent training sessions. This chargeable pick and mix service is tailored to your needs and includes:-

a. Site survey and / or survey of drawings
b. Accurate measurement of room interior
c. Production of scale drawing
d. Interpretation of information into relevant acoustic factors to give an indication of potential system performance
e. Use of information gathered and application of acoustic formulae to produce a prediction of the necessary type of loudspeakers and correct installation location
f. Further calculations to establish power levels required and most suitable amplification
g. Specification of need for and type of system equalisation
h. Production of a detailed specification so that installation work can then be checked through to commissioning
i. Accurate setting up of system equalisation using computerised test and measurement equipment
j. Assessment of legacy systems
k. On site one to one training

Largest ever ISE a hit with HE customers

We took to the road in our luxury VIP coach with 18 of our customers on 1st February, en route to Amsterdam and the largest ISE show to date with over 35,000 visitors.

A key element of the trip was Reflex's Customer Workshop. It's the fifth year running that Reflex has held the workshop and it's become an important element of the show for us, with 25 customers taking part this year.

The Workshop's objectives are twofold. Firstly it opens up a dialogue with the market about their requirements for technology services and most importantly, gives us an understanding of what customers are looking for in the future.

Secondly the Workshop helps to educate about various aspects of AV and promotes the sharing of ideas.

During the workshop we asked customer to vote for the product of the day and the results were:

  • The NEC 3D display
  • A range of improved TeamMate products – with easier rear access with quick release panels and fuss free approach to internal patch panel
  • Steljes Waterproof screen – a wide screen HD ready waterproof 17" Aquavision
  • Wolfvision display 3D Visualiser – for applications in science and education, product & design, engineering, medical and telemedicine or videoconferencing/telepresence

An area of real interest was the roadmapping from NEC, Crestron, Elmo and SMART, giving a glimpse of what might be expected at the 2012 event perhaps! The overall theme to future technology seems to be in augmented reality/touch, optical technology and video communication.

When asked how he found the show, Steve Hurford, AV Supervisor at Birkbeck College said "I found it invaluable. It was really good to meet so many people along with the opportunity to meet the manufacturers and gain knowledge of the latest products and technologies."
